Blencathra is one of my favourite mountains in the Lake District with so many different routes up and down. Having led a group up Hall's Fell Ridge earlier in the summer, I chose Sharp Edge for an opportune summer evening outing.

Sharp Edge is a classic grade-1 knife-edge scramble. It requires a good head for heights, the right equipment, and should only be attempted by experienced scramblers used to similar routes like Striding Edge or Grib Goch. Also, due to the nature of the Skiddaw slate that makes up the ridge, it becomes treaturous in the wet and should be saved for dry conditions.

All that said, it is a brilliant way to ascend the mountain - the sense of exposure on the ridge and 360 degree views of the Lakes combing for maximum affect! It's easily accessible from the A66 - the whole walk up and down can be done in a few hours - in this case making it a post work hike for me on a long summer's evening!

Fancy tackling Blencathra - with or without a ridge scramble? Get in touch and I'll gladly help!
